TASHKENT, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has voiced his country's support for the Western Europe-Western China international transport corridor and called for creating new links in the Central Asian region, the president's press service said Friday.

"First of all, we are talking about the pairing of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Western Europe-Western China transport corridor with new railway projects in our region," Mirziyoyev said in a video message during the International Forum on Northern Economic Cooperation 2020.

The forum, initiated by South Korea, started Friday in Seoul under the theme "Global changes after COVID-19 and the Future of Northern Economic Cooperation." Leaders of South Korea, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Mongolia and other countries are attending the conference.

Mirziyoyev, besides addressing the issues of the joint efforts to mitigate the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, highlighted the importance of realization of transport projects such as the Western Europe-Western China transport corridor.

In this regard, he proposed to start working out these unique projects at the expert level, the press service said.

The transcontinental corridor is expected to go through Shymkent city in Kazakhstan, which is around 120 km from the Uzbek capital of Tashkent.

Considered as an important part of China's Silk Road Economic Belt and the overland portion of the Belt and Road Initiative, the corridor is a transcontinental project to link Europe and China through Russia and Kazakhstan. Enditem
