JAKARTA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia released a Sumatran tigress (Panthera tigris sumatrae) to the Kappi area, Gunung Leuser National Park in Gayo district, Aceh province, on Tuesday, according to the North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency.

The agency's Head Hotmauli Sianturi said the tigress named Sri Nabilla got trapped in Tapus Sipagimbal village, Aek Bilah sub district, South Tapanuli district, North Sumatra province, on Aug. 24, 2020.

Officers caught Nabilla because she has often entered the settlement and preyed on residents' livestock.

After entering the trap, Nabilla was evacuated to the Barumun Nagari Wildlife Sanctuary in South Tapanuli.

At that time, Nabilla was malnourished with lice on her body and looked thin because she did not get enough food.

Nabilla, that is estimated to be three years old, was also dehydrated, anemic, and had indications of liver problems.

Before Nabilla was set free to the Kappi area, she was treated for 2.5 months at the Barumun Nagari Wildlife Sanctuary. On Oct. 30, 2020, the test results concluded that she was ready to return to the wild.

The Kappi area is the habitat of the Sumatran tigers, located in an altitude of 1,320 masl (meters above sea level) with water resources and foods.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources classifies the Sumatran tiger as an endangered species, with a population around 500-600 individuals. Enditem
