BERLIN, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- The share of renewable energies in Germany's transport sector will have to be increased significantly again, the country's Minister for the Environment Svenja Schulze said on Tuesday.
"We must become even more ambitious in expanding renewable energies," Schulze wrote in a commentary in the German business newspaper Handelsblatt.
By 2030, Germany must increase the share of renewable energy in the transport sector to at least 14 percent, according to a target set by the European Union (EU). Schulze proposes to "go beyond" the EU directive by reaching the target by 2026.
Since electricity from renewable energy sources would not be available in unlimited quantities until 2030, Schulze said electricity should be used "as efficiently as possible."
According to Schulze, the draft bill for Germany's transport sector includes significant incentives for the production of green hydrogen and it also calls for a mandatory two percent quota for electricity-based fuels in aviation.
Instead of the two gigawatts (GW) of electrolysis capacity for green hydrogen in transport specified in the country's national hydrogen strategy, the required capacity by 2030 would now be at least 3.6 GW.
Due to a lack of good alternatives, the use of green hydrogen should be promoted for aircraft, ships and trucks. For cars, on the other hand, electric drive is the "best solution", offering at least five times the efficiency of synthetic fuels, Schulze stressed.
Because of the climate crisis and air pollution in cities, a change of course is finally being made in Germany and Europe, but also in other major markets, such as China and California, Schulze wrote. "The competition for the best solutions is in full swing," she said. Enditem
