LJUBLJANA, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia on Thursday reported 1,925 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the national tally to 50,780, according to official figures.

The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients increased from 1,192 to 1,210 and 41 new deaths took the toll to 686 -- both new highs, while 200 remain in intensive care units.

The country conducted 6,767 coronavirus tests on Wednesday, 28.45 percent of which came back positive, down one percentage point from the previous day.

Government spokesperson Jelko Kacin said that the situation was calming down, as fewer tests were conducted and fewer infections confirmed than the day before.

The reproduction number continues to drop and stands at 0.91, which means that one infected person infects less than one person, Kacin said.

According to the official COVID-19 tracker site, there are currently 20,154 active cases in the country.

As the world is struggling to contain the pandemic, countries including France, China, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States are racing to find a vaccine.
