ACCRA, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Former Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings, aged 73, died in Accra on Thursday, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced.
"The tragic event occurred at 10:10 a.m. on Thursday at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where the former president was receiving treatment, after a short illness," Akufo-Addo said in a statement.
The president has declared seven days of national mourning starting from this Friday, directing that all flags around the country fly at half-mast in honor of the former president.
Jerry John Rawlings served as the president of Ghana from 1993 to 2001. Enditem
