Algeria reports record daily rise in COVID-19 infections

ALGIERS, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Algeria on Tuesday reported a record 1,002 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, bringing the total infections to 68,591 in the country.

Head of the Scientific Committee for Monitoring COVID-19, Dr Djamel Fourar, said that the death toll jumped to 2,186, including a record number of 18 fatalities recorded in the past 24 hours.

As many as 45,699 patients have recovered, including 611 over the past 24 hours, added Fourar, noting that 39 patients are still in intensive care units.

Several businesses, including those in the capital Algiers, have been ordered to shut down as of Tuesday. Lockdown hours in several cities were also extended.
