DHAKA, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Customs officials at Bangladesh's main airport in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday seized 60 gold bars weighing 6.9 kg from a Bangladeshi passenger who arrived here by a flight of Emirates Airlines from Dubai.
Acting on a tip-off, the customs officials detained the Bangladeshi national with the gold bars worth about 51.7 million taka (about 608,683 U.S. dollars) on Wednesday morning, Mohammad Marufur Rahman, a senior customs official, told journalists.
The man was arrested when he was crossing the boarding bridge area at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at around 8:30 a.m. local time Wednesday.
According to the official, the man will be handed over to the police.
Sources said organized gangs of local smugglers having link with their foreign sidekicks have been increasingly using Bangladesh as a transit for the illegal transportation of gold, foreign currencies, contraband drug and medicines. Enditem
