ADDIS ABABA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the African continent has reached 1,998,253, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said on Wednesday.

The continental disease control and prevention agency said in a statement that the death toll related to the pandemic stood at 48,016 as of Wednesday afternoon.

BANGKOK -- Thailand's Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on Wednesday approved the extension of an emergency decree for 45 days to stem the spread of COVID-19.

The extension will span through the New Year festival and an international badminton tournament, CCSA spokesman Kaweesi Visanuyothin confirmed.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) reported five new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 58,135.

YANGON -- The number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 73,322 in Myanmar with 1,592 new COVID-19 infections recorded Wednesday, according to a statement from the Health and Sports Ministry.

TIANJIN -- North China's Tianjin Municipality reported one new asymptomatic COVID-19 case on Wednesday, local health authorities said.

The person is a 33-year-old female resident from the Kanhaixuan community, according to the city's center for disease control and prevention.

TEHRAN -- Iran's health ministry reported 13,421 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, raising the total nationwide infections to 801,894.

The pandemic has so far claimed 42,941 lives in Iran, up by 480 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

TOKYO -- The number of foreign visitors to Japan in October plummeted by 98.9 percent from a year ago due to the global COVID-19 outbreak, the government said in a report on Wednesday.

According to estimates by the Japan National Tourism Organization, 27,400 foreign travelers arrived in Japan in October. Among them, Vietnam accounted for the most with 6,200, followed by China with 4,500, South Korea with 2,000 and Thailand with 1,400.

ULAN BATOR -- A total of 18 more locally transmitted cases of COVID-19 were reported across Mongolia on Wednesday, according to the country's National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD).
