Tokyo stocks open lower on concern over COVID-19 spike

TOKYO, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened lower Thursday on concerns over a resurgence of COVID-19 infections across the country, with the daily cases topping the 2,000-mark for the first time on Wednesday.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 134.98 points, or 0.52 percent, from Wednesday to 25,593.16.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 5.79 points, or 0.34 percent, at 1,714.86.

Iron and steel, air transportation and real estate issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell. Enditem
