LUSAKA, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Though a relatively new concept in Zambia, weekend markets are gaining polarity among small-scale businesses that see them as launch pads for growth.

For many small businesses looking to expand, weekend markets are providing a platform for traders to showcase their products as well as connecting them to bigger business opportunities.

There are several weekend markets that have sprung up in Zambia's capital Lusaka in recent times. While most of them are confined to a specific kind of trade such as arts and crafts, a few others offer a wide range of products that include clothes and food.

These markets provide convenient shopping spaces for the working class, most of whom are too busy to venture into shopping during workdays, which typically run from Monday to Friday.

"Unlike traditional markets, these ones attract tourists and well-established corporations looking to partner with small businesses. That is one of the biggest advantages of weekend markets," said David Kalenga, who sells fresh fruits and vegetables at a weekend market in Lusaka's Makeni area.

Kalenga's sentiments were echoed by other traders that participate in weekend markets who added that these platforms have not only helped businesses navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic but also ensure growth and expansion.

"There is great potential and a lot of opportunities in weekend markets especially those that are strategically located and designed. One only needs to be consistent and ensure that they package their products or services in an attractive manner," said Kalenga. Enditem
