BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ADDIS ABABA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the African continent has reached 2,043,462, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said on Saturday.

The continental disease control and prevention agency said in a statement that the death toll related to the pandemic stood at 49,099 as of Saturday afternoon.

YANGON -- Myanmar recorded 1,434 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and 27 more deaths, according to a press release from the health ministry on Saturday.

The total number of coronavirus infections in the country has increased to 77,848 with 1,722 deaths.

KIEV -- A total of 612,665 COVID-19 cases and 10,813 deaths have been registered in Ukraine as of Saturday, while 282,313 patients have recovered, according to the country's health ministry.

A record 14,580 people tested positive for COVID-19 in the country in the past 24 hours, while 7,989 patients have recovered, the ministry added.

TEHRAN -- The total number of COVID-19 infections confirmed in Iran rose on Saturday to 841,308, after 12,931 new cases were registered in the past 24 hours.

Sima Sadat Lari, the spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education, said at her daily briefing that 2,155 of the newly infected required hospitalization.

Between Friday and Saturday, she further said, 431 deaths of COVID-19 patients were registered, taking the total death toll of the epidemic in Iran to 44,327 so far.

TOKYO -- Japan reported 2,560 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, a record number of daily infections for a fourth consecutive day, according to the latest figures from the health ministry and local authorities.

The latest rise in cases brought the nation's tally to 130,915, not including those connected to the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined near Tokyo earlier in the year.

In the capital of Tokyo, the epicenter of the country's outbreak, a record-high of 539 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Saturday, exceeding the previous record of 534 registered on Thursday, bringing the cumulative total to 37,317, the highest among the country's 47 prefectures.

HOHHOT -- Two new locally-transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported Saturday in a border city of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the regional health commission said.

The cases were reported between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday in the city of Manzhouli, which borders Russia and Mongolia.
