BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Argentine officials are planning the biggest vaccination campaign in the country's history, the chief of the cabinet of ministers, Santiago Cafiero, said on Saturday.

Argentine people will be vaccinated in what will be "the largest vaccination campaign in Argentine history, something unprecedented in our country," Cafiero said in a statement released by his office.

Argentina's government plans to buy vaccines against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) once they are approved by the National Administration of Drugs, Foods and Medical Devices.

"Our responsibility is to acquire them in real time, when they are approved in the rest of the world and the vaccinations begin," said Cafiero.

Among Argentina's vaccine options are a vaccine being developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, another by Pfizer and the Russian Sputnik V, he said.

The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez, said Thursday the plan was to vaccinate about 10 million people from January to February 2021.

The South American country registered its first case of COVID-19 on March 3 and reported a total of 1,359,042 cases and 36,790 deaths from the disease as of Friday night. Enditem
