OUAGADOUGOU, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Voters went to the polls on Sunday in a general election in Burkina Faso amid a deteriorating security situation.

The polls opened at 6 a.m. local time and will close at 6 p.m. local time.

Overshadowed by growing jihadist attacks, polling stations will remain shut in part of the country's northern and eastern regions, according to the National Independent Electoral Commission.

Incumbent President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, who has been in power since 2015, is seeking a second term. Thirteen people will run for presidency and 10,652 candidates will compete in the parliamentary election.

About 6,490,144 nationals in Burkina Faso and overseas are expected to cast their votes in 21,155 polling stations.

Provisional results of the first round of the election will come out by midweek, the commission said. Enditem
