SHIBERGHAN, Afghanistan, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) killed six militants during an ongoing search operation in Fayzabad district of northern Jawzjan province, the provincial police chief said Monday.

"The ANSDSF launched the search operation on Saturday, six militants had been killed and five others wounded during clashes with security forces so far, and several villagers had been cleared from militants," Gen. Abdul Wahid Wejdan told Xinhua.

The raid was conducted after Taliban militants disrupted freedom of movement and extort villagers as well as drivers along Highway No. 1, passing through Fayzabad, he said.

The district has been the scene of clashes and fighting since during recent months.

On Saturday, five district police, including deputy provincial police chief Shah Aqa Shetab, were wounded after Taliban militants ambushed their vehicle by a roadside bomb in Fayzabad, the police chief said, adding the raid will continue before the district is cleared from militants.

The ANDSF has been continuing cleanup operations across Afghanistan since early this year as daily violence and clashes remain in the country.

Taliban militants have not responded to the report so far. Enditem
