DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people have been killed and six others injured on Sunday evening after a commuter bus overturned on a steep slope in Tanzania's northwest municipality of Bukoba in Kagera region, police said on Monday.

Revocatus Malimi, the Kagera regional police commander, said preliminary investigations showed that the commuter bus overturned on Sunday at 7:40 p.m. after its breaks failed when descending on a steep slope.

"Six of the victims were passengers in the commuter bus and two were pedestrians who were knocked down on the road", Malimi told Xinhua in a telephone interview.

He said police were holding the driver of the commuter bus who is one of the injured people admitted to hospital.

"The driver will help police to establish the cause of the accident," said Malimi, adding that the commuter bus was plying between Bukoba municipality and Kemondo port on Lake Victoria. Enditem
