India's COVID-19 tally reaches 9,177,840 as daily cases fall

NEW DELHI, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 9,177,840 on Tuesday as 37,975 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the federal health ministry.

According to the data, the death toll mounted to 134,218 with 480 new deaths.

This is the first time in almost a week when the daily spike of COVID-19 cases fell below 40,000, and the daily deaths fell below 500-mark.

Delhi has seen a sudden spike in the number of new COVID-19 cases. Nearly 4,500 new cases were registered and 121 people died here in the past 24 hours, showed the official data. Over 2,000 people have died in Delhi this month so far.

There are still 438,667 cases in the country, while 8,604,955 people have been discharged from hospitals after medical treatment, added the ministry's latest data.

The federal government is ramping up COVID-19 testing facilities across the country. Till Monday a total of 133,682,275 tests were conducted, out of which 1,099,545 tests were conducted on Monday alone, said the figures released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Tuesday.

On Monday the country's Home Minister (Internal Security) Amit Shah inaugurated a mobile testing laboratory at the ICMR headquarters in New Delhi which would offer RT-PCR tests for the public free of cost.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin, which is being developed by India's biotechnology company Bharat Biotech International Limited, entered the third phase of trial last Friday. Enditem
