SUVA, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation (MWCPA) on Wednesday launched public consultations for making a five-year national action plan to prevent violence against women and girls.

Fiji's Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama attended the official inauguration of the consultations, which, according to him, would ensure an evidence-based and inclusive approach to developing the 2021-2026 national action plan to protect women and girls in the country from violence.

Bainimarama said that two of every three women in Fiji have experienced physical or sexual violence by a male intimate partner in their lifetime and that in 2019 alone, 10 women were killed by their intimate partners.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa said the Fijian government recognizes its obligation to prevent violence against women and girls in the island nation, which records a high rate of violence against women and girls, in public and private spaces. Enditem
