JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday condemned the violence in the road freight industry which has seen trucks being burnt and drivers being killed in the last few weeks.
There were a series of arson attacks with 30 trucks set alight within the past week.
Ramaphosa said the violence is causing business and economic disruption when the country is focused on rebuilding the economy.
"As South Africans, we cannot possibly tolerate the mindless and bloody lawlessness with which the road freight industry is being targeted. We cannot tolerate this loss of life and destruction of property," he said.
The president welcomed the arrest of some of those involved in the violence.
Ramaphosa said those who are involved in violence should be brought to book. He directed the ministers of Employment and Labour, Transport, Home Affairs and Police to submit a report on this matter to him.
Road Freight Association (RAF) CEO Gavin Kelly said the road freight companies find themselves being attacked by forces under the pretext of foreign nationals "taking jobs away from citizens." Enditem
