KUWAIT CITY, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations office in Kuwait launched on Wednesday the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

"Kuwait has shown great progress in this regard through its commitment to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and other global mechanisms," Tareq Al-Sheikh, UN secretary general's representative and resident coordinator to Kuwait, said in a press statement.

On Aug. 19, the Kuwaiti National Assembly passed a new law on Protection from Domestic Violence, which allows the creation of a national committee to draw up policies to protect women from domestic violence, he noted.

The Kuwaiti government and the United Nations have jointly carried out research and collected data on the extent of all forms of gender-based violence, including domestic violence, as well as statistical data on complaints, prosecutions and sentences, according to the UN official.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that runs from Nov. 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, until Dec. 10, the Human Rights Day, according to the UN website. Enditem
