SANTIAGO, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chile on Thursday reported 97 daily deaths from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the highest number of fatalities in a single day since Sept. 24, raising the total death toll to 15,235.

In the same 24 hours, tests detected 1,564 new cases of infection, pushing the accumulated caseload to 545,662, the Ministry of Health said.

According to the ministry, of that total, 521,247 patients have recovered from the disease, while 8,872 cases are considered to be still active, including 694 people who have been hospitalized in intensive care units.

Chile remains under a state of catastrophe, with a nighttime curfew to reduce circulation and the spread of the virus. However, several cities have moved to relax lockdown measures, while others, mainly in the south, have had to revert to stricter lockdowns due to a rise in infections.

On Monday, the country reopened its borders to foreign visitors in a bid to reactivate tourism. Enditem
