COLOMBO, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka has made the first trial of using drones to spray fertilizer on the paddy fields in the Asian country, local media reported Friday.
The trial was made on Wednesday in the village of Panwila in the country's southern district of Galle, marking the launch of a government program on using drones to spray organic fertilizer on paddy fields.
Mohan P. De Silva, state minister of production and supply of fertilizer and regulation of chemical Fertilizer and insecticide use, attended the event, the state-owned Daily News reported.
De Silva said the government program was meant to curb excessive use of the fertilizer and help reduce the cost of spraying fertilizer for farmers.
"Following the introduction of the new technology, farmers will be facilitated to apply fertilizer into their field in a much shorter time," De Silva said.
Positive results of the trials may lead to a broader use of agricultural drones across the country, De Silva said.
