STOCKHOLM, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Nursing home residents are among the most vulnerable of the Swedish population in the COVID-19 pandemic, the country's chief epidemiologist said on Thursday.

"The mortality rate is particularly high in these specific groups," because it is mostly the elderly who suffer from chronic diseases and live in conditions that bring more risks, Sweden's state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell told local media Swedish Television.

Between March 1 and Nov. 23, 3,002 people who live in long-term care facilities and 1,696 elderly people who receive residential care have died of COVID-19, the press quoted data newly released by the National Board of Health and Welfare as saying.

The pandemic has continued to affect the elderly care system during the fall, with 363 deaths recorded since October, according to the data. Enditem
