ABUJA, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Five Boko Haram militants were killed and several others wounded by troops who raided the hideouts of the terror group in the Nigerian northeastern state of Borno, said a spokesman for the army on Sunday.

Benard Onyeuko, a spokesman for the army, said the raids were carried out on Nov. 27, and the military continued to clear identified enclaves of the Boko Haram group in the volatile northeast region.

Onyeuko told Xinhua that the five terrorists were killed in the raids carried out in the villages of Garal and Bulankesa, as well as in Pulka town, in Borno.

Many terrorists also fled into nearby bushes during the raids, with debilitating gunshot wounds, he said, adding the operations were aimed at driving out the remnants of the Boko Haram group from their hideouts in the northeast region.

Boko Haram has been trying to establish an Islamist state in northeastern Nigeria since 2009, extending its attacks to countries in the Lake Chad Basin. Enditem
