JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- South African government has started implementing the Presidential Employment Stimulus to create jobs and reconstruct the economy affected by the COVID-19, said the Presidency on Tuesday.

The plan, which was announced on Oct. 15 by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the joint sitting of parliament, is to create public and social employment and protect the existing jobs in vulnerable sectors and support for livelihood and enterprise opportunities.

Presidency spokesperson Tyrone Seale said 11 national departments and all nine provinces are implementing the employment stimulus.

"The employment stimulus aims to create or support close to 800,000 opportunities within the current financial year. Over 400,000 opportunities have already been supported, with several programs in the recruitment or beneficiary identification phase. The remaining programs are all on track to meet their targets," he said.

"The speed and scale at which the presidential employment stimulus has been implemented demonstrates the government's commitment to act with urgency to support South Africa's economic recovery," he added. Enditem
