ADEN, Yemen, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Forces loyal to Yemen's government killed a mid-level commander of the Houthi rebel group in an ambush in the country's southern province of Dhalea on Wednesday, a military official told Xinhua.

"The pro-government soldiers set up a well-planned ambush and targeted a patrol of the Houthi militia in Dhalea's northeastern part, killing a mid-level commander of the rebel group," the local military source said on condition of anonymity.

He confirmed that three bodyguards of the mid-level Houthi commander were killed also by the same ambush occurred in Juban district.

"The Houthi military commander identified as Al-Dailmy was working as a supervisor and leads scores of militiamen in the area," he said.

Last year, the Houthi fighters launched a series of intense armed attacks on the positions of the Yemeni government forces and succeeded in seizing key areas on the outskirts of Dhalea.

The areas in the north and west of Dhalea have been witnessing non-stop fighting between government forces and Houthi fighters for about four years.

Yemen has been plagued by a civil war since late 2014 when Houthi militias forced the internationally-recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi into exile. Enditem
