PORTO ALEGRE, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Gremio became the third Brazilian club to progress to the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals with a 2-0 home win over Guarani here on Thursday.
Aldemir Ferreira opened the scoring at Arena do Gremio by side-footing home after a Bruno Cortez cross in the third minute.
Antonio Rodrigues put the result beyond doubt when he combined with Diego Souza in the 97th minute and slotted a first-time shot into an unguarded net after goalkeeper Gaspar Servio was drawn out of his six-yard box.
Guarani were forced to play the last nine minutes with only 10 men after Miguel Benitez was shown a straight red card for a violent tackle on Souza.
Tuesday's result meant 2017 champions Gremio prevailed 4-0 on aggregate after their 2-0 victory in Paraguay last week.
Other Brazilian teams to have already secured a berth in the last eight of South America's top club competition are Santos and Palmeiras. Enditem
