PARIS, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Marseille claimed its fifth straight victory in Ligue 1 on Friday by beating 10-man Nimes 2-0 away which saw the team climb to the second place of the League table, only one point adrift of leader Paris Saint-Germain with a game in hand.

The defending champions, who travel to Montpellier on Saturday, are topping the table with 25 points, while four teams - Lille, Lyon, Monaco and Montpellier - are level on 23.

Argentine striker Dario Benedetto struck the opener for the visitor in the 57th minute. Substitute Valere Germain added another one at six minutes to the regular time after Nimes' midfielder Andres Cubas was sent off for getting a second yellow card in the 77th minute.

Andre Villas-Boas' side has just gotten rid of the humiliating record of a 13-game losing streak in the Champions League midweek with a 2-1 win over Olympiacos, but it has built up a good momentum in the league as its unbeaten run was extended to eight games after Friday's win. The last league defeat for Marseille dated back to mid-September when it lost to Saint-Etienne 2-0 at home.

Marseille will visit Manchester City for their last Champions League group match on Wednesday with a glimmer of hope to obtain a ticket to the Europa League if the French club could get a better result than Olympiacos gets in the other group match against Porto.

The two sides are all on three points but Olympiacos holds an upper hand with more away goals. Enditem
