KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Malaysian government said Saturday that it will extend the movement control order in several areas till Dec. 20 in order to control the spread of COVID-19.

Defense Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who coordinates the implementation of COVID-19 restrictions in the Asian country, announced at a press briefing the extension of restrictions already in place in Kuala Lumpur, the adjacent Selangor state and the eastern state of Sabah.

Meanwhile, the restrictions in other areas including Putrajaya, south of Kuala Lumpur, will be lifted, he said.

On Saturday, Malaysia's Health Ministry reported 1,123 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the national total to 71,359.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that five of the new cases are imported and 1,118 are local transmissions.

Four new deaths were reported from the coronavirus epidemic, raising the death toll to 380.

An additional 1,143 patients have recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 60,204, or 84.4 percent of all cases.

Of the remaining 10,775 active cases, 130 are being held in intensive care units and 54 of those are in need of assisted breathing. Enditem
