LIMA, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Peru's interim president Francisco Sagasti reaffirmed on Saturday that his government would be inflexible when dealing with acts of corruption and would not back down from this policy during his time in office.

"There is definitely no going back in the fight against corruption," Sagasti told Radio Programas del Peru.

Sagasti, who assumed the presidency on Nov. 17, also stated his regret over the attitude of some politicians who act as if the institutions they head were their own private property, while others advise private companies and do not differentiate between the common good and the private good.

He added that corruption is one of the main problems facing the country and it is not new.

Peru lost about 6.4 billion U.S. dollars last year due to acts of corruption in various public agencies, the Comptroller General of the Republic indicated in a report.

Sagasti, who will lead the transitional government until July 28, 2021, promised in his first message to the nation that he would support the Peruvian justice system as it investigates former senior government officials involved in corruption. Enditem
