LUSAKA, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-one Zambian students from various higher learning institutions joined Chinese technology giant Huawei Technologies' "Seeds for the Future" program to get skills in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), a release said on Monday.

The release from Huawei Technologies Zambia said the program was Huawei's flagship event held annually to nurture young ICT talents.

The students were trained in subjects to do with 5G, sustainable development in relation to ICT as well as many more ICT courses for five days virtually.

Minister of Higher Education Brian Mushimba said during the closing ceremony that the program has grown from strength to strength and that the Chinese firm has continually cooperated with the government to implement it for six consecutive years since 2015.

"To date, a total of 50 outstanding students from different universities across Zambia have since visited China for the ICT talent training ever since the program was introduced," he said.

According to him, the partnership signals great strides and a great future in the area of ICT knowledge sharing for Zambia.

"We have no doubt that the knowledge being imparted in our students will culminate into improved employability and this much needed human resource being trained will, in turn, made a big difference in our economy," he added.

Josphat Kalezhi, a lecturer from Copperbelt University commended Huawei for the support it has been giving to institutions.

"We also want to thank them for remaining committed to all the programs they have pledged to higher learning institutions. We understand very well that the future is digital and so such programs help us to prepare for it," he said.

Violet Nyakunza, one of the students from the University of Lusaka said the event presented her with opportunities to learn not only courses related to academics but also culture and how it could impact relationships.

She further said the event was also a great opportunity to learn how COVID-19 had affected lifestyles and how technology has come in handy to help people come round the current situation. Enditem
