DHAKA, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- The last span of the Padma Bridge, the biggest of its kind in Bangladesh, was installed on Thursday, marking the completion of the bridge's 6.15-km main structure above the water.

Engineers and workers of China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co, Ltd (MBEC) successfully put the 3,376-ton span in place, on pillars 12 and 13, in presence of Bangladeshi and Chinese officials.

The installation process concluded at around noon, Dewan Md Abdul Kader, manager of Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project from the Bangladesh Bridge Authority, told reporters.

The official said the bridge's construction was not disrupted by COVID-19 with the 40th span installed on Dec. 4, noting that Bangladesh is fighting a growing second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Padma Bridge is designed to have 41 spans, with each span being 150 meters long. The first span was installed in September 2017.

The 25-m-wide and 10-km-long bridge stretches across the Padma river, one of the three major rivers in Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the main works of the Padma Bridge project in December 2015.

The bridge is expected to help enhance regional trade and collaboration along the Asian highway No. 1 and the Trans-Asian railway network.

The project's Chinese contractor MBEC in a paper said it attached utmost importance to environment protection during building the bridge, and adopted international standards concerning health, safety and environmental assessment, including guidelines by World Health Organization and Bangladesh's environmental authorities.

For example, the company said it used underwater sonar for noise index measurement in order to control the noise generated in the piling works to protect vulnerable local animals.
