LJUBLJANA, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Germany's Karl Geiger won the individual event of the Ski Flying World Championship at Slovenia's Planica on Saturday.

Geiger led from start to finish as the individual event started with two rounds on Friday and wrapped up on Saturday with another two rounds, claiming his first Ski Flying World Championships title with a total of 877.2 points.

It went right down to the wire as Geiger defeated Norway's Halvor Egner Granerud by just 0.5 points. Germany's Markus Eisenbichler took third place.

"There was a lot of pressure. It felt good already after the first jump, but I was aware that I had to stay focused until the last jump. This is unbelievable. I really felt good right from the get-go," Geiger told local media.

"It's incredible that I can stand on top of the podium in an individual competition at such a main event, that's new for me," said Geiger. It's so emotional, I'm overwhelmed. Nobody would have expected that from me in Ski Flying, I was always considered stronger on smaller hills."

Geiger is Germany's first Ski Flying World Champion since Severin Freund triumphed in Harrachov six years ago, and his title is the seventh for a German ski jumper.

The World Championships conclude with the team event on Sunday. Enditem
