HONG KONG, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Director-General of Civil Aviation of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government Victor Liu has been elected as the chairperson of the Regional Aviation Safety Group - Asia Pacific Region (RASG-APAC) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) at an online conference.

The election of Liu as the chairperson is a recognition of Hong Kong's efforts in and commitment to aviation safety through its continued collaboration with the ICAO, aviation regulators and industry partners in the international aviation community, the HKSAR government said.

Liu said the RASG-APAC plays an instrumental role in ensuring the continuous improvement of aviation safety in the Asia Pacific region and he will devote his best efforts to further promote aviation safety with regional partners.

The RASG-APAC was established in 2011 under the auspices of the ICAO, with 41 APAC members. The organization aims to support a regional performance framework for the management of aviation safety and also serves as a regional platform to promote members and industry safety initiatives in harmony with the ICAO Global Aviation Safety Plan and Global Aviation Safety Roadmap.
