UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- The outgoing UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Nickolay Mladenov, who was tipped to become the new special envoy for Libya, has decided to resign from the world body, said a UN spokesman on Tuesday.

"On Monday, Nickolay Mladenov informed the secretary-general (Antonio Guterres) that when his term as special coordinator for the Middle East peace process ends on Dec. 31, he will resign from the United Nations and will not be able to take up the position of special envoy for Libya, for which, as you know, he had been considered," Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for Guterres, told reporters.

"Mr. Mladenov told the secretary-general in a letter that he had taken this decision for personal and family reasons. The secretary-general thanked Mr. Mladenov for his dedicated service to the United Nations for the last seven years," said Dujarric.

Mladenov, a Bulgarian politician and diplomat, became the top UN envoy for Iraq in August 2013. He was appointed UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process in February 2015.

Guterres' proposal to appoint Mladenov as the new UN special envoy for Libya won the support of the Security Council last week. Enditem
