BERLIN, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Borussia Monchengladbach booked its spot in the last 16 of the German Cup after easing 5-0 past 10-man fourth division club Elversberg on Tuesday.

Elversberg staged a courageous opening period before Monchengladbach took the reins in style as Hannes Wolf nutmegged goalkeeper Frank Lehmann for the opener in the fifth minute.

Elversberg remained unimpressed and continued to be offensively minded, but the Foals clinically doubled their advantage with their next chance after Laszlo Benes utilized a rebound to make it 2-0 from the edge of the box with 21 minutes played.

Things went from bad to worse on 31 minutes when Elversberg's Sinan Tekerci received his marching orders.

Monchengladbach took advantage of its superior numbers and made it three through Lars Stindl, who slotted home from close range in the 36th minute.

After the break, Monchengladbach continued to press forward but had to wait until the 69th minute for another goal, as substitutes Patrick Herrmann and Ibrahima Traore exchanged passes before Herrmann nodded home for 4-0.

Herrmann thought he had scored his second goal of the night in the 75th minute but his effort was ruled offside.

Elversberg had a golden chance to score a consolation goal but Monchengladbach keeper Tobias Sippel won a one-on-one against Kevin Koffi.

The Foals rounded off the one-sided affair with a fifth goal as Julio Villalba converted a penalty in the closing stages.

Elsewhere, second division side Paderborn eliminated top-flight outfit Union Berlin with three first-half goals to clinch a 3-2 victory on the road and a spot in the last 16.

Borussia Dortmund took a hard earned 2-0 victory over second-tier Eintracht Braunschweig thanks to strikes from Mats Hummels and Jadon Sancho, while Darmstadt eased 3-0 past third division Dynamo Dresden. Enditem
