RAMALLAH, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- A senior Palestinian health official announced on Saturday that Palestine would receive the first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines within two weeks.

Kamal al-Shakhra, the Palestinian Health Ministry spokesman, told a news briefing in Ramallah that the ministry has contacted with the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure the vaccines for Palestine.

The ministry also contacted with several international companies which produce the vaccines, and asked for speedy delivery, he added.

He said that the vaccines is scheduled to start within two weeks.

The ministry also contacted with WHO to get the screening devices for testing the new strain of coronavirus.

"The epidemic situation in Palestine is catastrophic and heading to the most difficult and dangerous," al-Shakhra warned.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in the Palestinian territories in March, the ministry recorded 148,540 COVID-19 cases, including 1,406 death, and 123,121 had recovered. Enditem
