Myanmar seizes over 500 tons of illegal timbers

YANGON, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar authorities seized 504.57 tons of illegal timbers across the country last week, according to a release from the Forest Department under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation on Wednesday.

The seizures were made in the country's regions, states and the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory from Dec. 21 to 27.

The seized illegal timbers included 126.71 tons of teak, 87.07 tons of hardwood and 290.78 tons of other types of timber, the release said.

During the period, 62 people were charged in connection with the cases, along with the seizure of 52 vehicles and machines.

The development marked the latest efforts by the Forest Department to crack down on illegal logging and trading of forest products in the country. Meanwhile, the department has remained committed to tree planting projects. Enditem
