BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.73 percent to 3,528.68 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.16 percent higher at 15,147.57 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 1.27 trillion yuan (about 194.2 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 1.16 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Stocks related to the dairy, breeding and food processing sectors led the gains, with shares of Bright Dairy & Food Co. Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to close at 18.43 yuan apiece.
Going against the upward trend, shares of companies in the coal, automobile and mining services sectors led the losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.65 percent to close at 3,097.98 points on Tuesday. Enditem
