MEXICO CITY, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Remittances to Mexico from Mexicans living abroad exceeded 40 billion U.S. dollars in 2020, setting a new record despite the COVID-19 pandemic, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Wednesday.

"It was an exceptional year in terms of the resources sent by our emigrant compatriots to their families in Mexico," he said during his daily press conference.

"It established a record during the most difficult moments," added Lopez Obrador from the National Palace in Mexico City.

According to his administration's estimates, Mexico received 40.574 billion U.S. dollars in remittances in 2020, an increase of 11.3 percent over the previous year.

In addition, the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), which disseminates official statistics on remittances, reported on Monday that between January and November 2020, remittances increased by 10.9 percent to 36.946 billion U.S. dollars.

Mexico had already set a record in 2019 with remittances of 36.439 billion U.S. dollars, according to Banxico's most recent data. Enditem
