SUVA, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Fijian police said on Saturday that the overall crime rate in the island nation dropped by 18 percent from 2015 to 2019, though there was a rise in drug offenses.
According to Fiji's leading news website Fijivillage, this was revealed at the Fiji Police Force's Strategic Plan launched on Saturday.
The serious crimes in the country reduced from 3,758 in 2015 to 2,727 in 2019, but the cases of drug offenses increased from 479 in 2015 to 1,222 in 2019.
Fiji's Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu said for the next five years, their focus will be people-orientated by fostering a positive work environment to help officers realize their full potential, adding that enhancing capacity development will ultimately result in improved outputs and service delivery.
The Fijian police have taken proactive measures which include the installation of closed-circuit television cameras and the increasing deployment of police officers in Suva's streets, especially in high crime areas.
It is believed that the nationwide curfew since March 30 last year has helped deal with crimes in the country. Enditem
