India's COVID-19 tally rises to 10,571,773

NEW DELHI, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,571,773 on Monday even as 13,788 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, according to the latest data from the federal health ministry.

According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 152,419 as 145 COVID-19 patients died since Sunday morning.

There are still 208,012 active cases in the country, while 10,211,342 people have been discharged so far from hospitals after medical treatment.

Saturday was a crucial day in India's fight against the pandemic as the nationwide vaccination drive was kicked off during the day.

Till Sunday a total of 224,301 beneficiaries have been vaccinated, out of whom 17,072 beneficiaries were vaccinated on Sunday alone.

A total of 447 cases of Adverse Event Following Immunization (AEFIs) following COVID-19 vaccination have been reported on Saturday and Sunday, out of whom three required hospitalization.

Meanwhile, the federal government has ramped up COVID-19 testing facilities across the country, even as over 180 million tests have been conducted so far.

As many as 187,093,036 tests were conducted till Sunday, out of which 548,168 tests were conducted on Sunday alone, the latest data issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) showed on Monday.

The national capital Delhi, which has been one of the most COVID-19 affected places in the country, has been witnessing comparatively a lesser number of cases over the past couple of weeks. As many as 246 new cases and eight deaths were registered in the national capital through Saturday.

The national capital Delhi had recorded only four deaths on Thursday, the lowest number of deaths since May 11.

So far as many as 10,746 people have died in the national capital due to COVID-19, confirmed the Delhi's health department.

Two types of vaccines are being administered to the people in India. While the "Covishield" vaccine, made by the "Serum Institute of India (SII)", was supplied to all states, the "Covaxin" vaccine, made by the "Bharat Biotech International Limited", was supplied to only a number of states. Enditem
