Ecuador reports 969 COVID-19 infections in one day

QUITO, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador reported on Friday 969 new cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in the last 24 hours, for a total of 237,158 accumulated cases, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

The ministry also reported 30 deaths in the same period, bringing the total death toll to 9,913.

On Thursday, Ecuador launched its pilot vaccination program against COVID-19 starting with frontline healthcare personnel and seniors in nursing homes.

Minister of Health Juan Carlos Zevallos said the program was off to a good start on Friday, but asked the population to remain vigilant and follow preventive measures.

Mass vaccination in the South American country will begin in March, in accordance with international vaccine supply. Enditem
