California reports record daily rise in COVID-19 death

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- California, the most populous state in the United States, once again reported its highest daily rise in COVID-19 deaths on Friday.

The state registered 764 new COVID-19 deaths over the past 24 hours, taking its death toll to 35,768, the California Department of Public Health reported in a daily release on Friday.

Official statistics showed that the previous highest one-day death toll of 708 was recorded two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, the state logged another 23,024 cases in the past day, pushing its statewide tally up to 3,062,068. The state, home to around 40 million residents, became the first in the United States to register more than 3 million COVID-19 cases earlier this week.

A total of 18,985 COVID-19 patients are currently hospitalized in the state with 4,627 of them in intensive care, the department said.

Public health officials also said that providers reported administering a total of 1,795,174 vaccine doses statewide as of Thursday. Enditem
