Somali army kills 7 al-Shabab militants

MOGADISHU, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Somalia National Army (SNA) on Tuesday killed seven al-Shabab militants during an operation conducted in north of Baidoa town, the administrative capital of the South West State in Somalia.

Amin Mohamed Darur, South West State Police Commander in Baidoa told reporters that SNA and Southwest State forces carried out the operation against al-Shabab fighters after receiving tip-off from local residents.

"SNA and the South West State forces killed seven al-Shabab terrorists and injured several others in an area about 35 kilometers north of Baidoa town in Bay region this morning. The operation was very successful," said Darur.

The military commander did not clarify whether there were casualties on joint Somali forces which fought al-Shabab.

The al-Shabab militants on their part have not commented on the latest military onslaught but claimed to have attacked African Union and Somali army bases in Bay and Bakool region in the South West State. Enditem
