BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday warned against attempts pushing for the so-called "constitutional change" in Taiwan by a small number of stubborn secessionists playing tricks of "referendums" to seek independence.

These attempts will jeopardize cross-Strait relations, tear apart Taiwan society and endanger the interests of Taiwan compatriots, said Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office.

Resolutely cracking down on the secessionists seeking "Taiwan independence" and deterring such actions are necessary for safeguarding the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, Zhu said.

"We will pay close attention to the moves of the pro-independence secessionists," she said, adding that they could face serious consequences.
