LUSAKA, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Plans by Zambia to issue a license for a fourth mobile phone service provider will provide consumers with a wide range of choices, a consumer body said on Friday.

Minister of Transport and Communication Mutotwe Kafwaya said early this week that the government was in the process of licensing a fourth mobile phone operator to enhance competition in the communication sector.

The move was part of the government's efforts to prioritize the growth of the Information and Technology Communication sector.

Juba Sakala, executive secretary of the Zambia Consumer Association said the three mobile phone service operators in the country have developed complacency in the provision of quality services because of the monopoly they were enjoying.

"This announcement has brought relief to most consumers as it has given them a choice, improved quality of service and competition in the industry," he told Xinhua.

According to him, the entry of a fourth player in the sector was long overdue.

Zambia currently has three mobile phone service operators namely Airtel Zambia, MTN Zambia and Zamtel. Enditem
