JAKARTA, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia was projected to be a lower-middle-income country as its economic growth in 2020 contracted by 2.07 percent due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a minister said.

Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and gross national income (GNI) per capita experienced a decline in 2020, Minister of the National Development Planning Suharso Monoarfa told a virtual press conference here Tuesday.

Indonesia's GDP per capita in 2020 decreased to 3,911.7 U.S. dollars from 4,174.9 U.S. dollars in 2019, and the GNI per capita in 2020 reached 3,806 U.S. dollars, down from 4,047 U.S. dollars in 2019, the minister noted.

According to him, if the 2021 growth rate can reach 4.5-5.5 percent and next year's rate at 5 percent, Indonesia's per capita income is expected to stand at above 4,000 U.S. dollars, and it is hoped to become a middle-upper-income country again. Enditem
