Brazil's COVID-19 death toll tops 300,000

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's COVID-19 death toll amounted to 300,685 on Wednesday after 2,009 more people died of COVID-19 in the previous 24 hours, the Ministry of Health said.

The latest figure makes Brazil's outbreak the second-deadliest in the world, only after the United States.

Just one day before, the South American country saw a record daily count of 3,251 deaths.

According to the ministry, tests detected 89,992 new cases of COVID-19, the third-highest daily tally since the onset of the pandemic in the country.

Some 12,220,011 people in Brazil have now tested positive for the virus.

As of Tuesday, Brazil have vaccinated 17.1 million people against COVID-19. Enditem
