NAIROBI, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's state-owned electricity company said Thursday that it plans to add 83.3 Megawatts of geothermal power to the national grid by the end of 2021.
Rebecca Miano, CEO, Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) told a virtual investor briefing that the firm is concentrating on its capacity growth to ensure it can provide competitively priced electricity to the economy.
"Currently, Olkaria 1 Unit 6 (geothermal power station) is in progress on-site and will be commissioned later in the year," Miano said during the KenGen's 68th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday.
The electricity firm said that it has an installed capacity of 1,818 MW, accounting for 64 percent of the country's power.
KenGen electricity production consists of approximately 818 MW hydropower, 706 MW geothermal, 253.5 MW thermal and the rest from wind sources.
Miano noted that other projects in the pipeline under the country's least-cost development plan include rehabilitating Olkaria I as well as a joint venture with investors to add another 140 MW of power in the country. Enditem
