COLOMBO, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 rose to 103,487 on Wednesday after the Asian country recorded a highest daily surge of 1,096 infections, showed data from the Health Ministry.

Out of the new cases, 200 were reported in Western Province including the national capital Colombo. The province is currently a hotbed for the spread of COVID-19.

According to the official data, 94,856 patients have recovered from the coronavirus epidemic and been discharged from hospitals in Sri Lanka, where the number of active cases stands currently at 7,976 and the death toll at 655.

A new COVID-19 virus variant is spreading in Sri Lanka, with experts saying it has hit more young people.

The resurgence of COVID-19 has led to a shortage of beds in intensive care units in hospitals nationwide, State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics, and COVID-19 Disease Control, Sudarshani Fernandopulle, was quoted as saying by local media reports.

Hospitals are also reaching their maximum capacity, health officials said. Enditem
